My years at Penn State were some of the best of my life. I still get so excited when I go back to school and just the thought of being on campus or downtown makes me happy. Penn State has such a great culture, one that cannot really be explained unless you go there. I still remember loving the school when I went to visit and went on a tour, but actually going to school there was SO MUCH better. I have blogged a few times about Penn State Dance Marathon, however today I am going to blog about a special person at PSU and that person is Mike the Mailman. Mike the Mailman is a Penn State legend. He is so nice and uplifting, it was always an honor to be in his presence. CBS news ran a story a few years ago on him, and here is the link: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/penn-state-postman-delivers-lesson-in-happiness/
In describing his interactions with customers at their trips to the post office here is what Mike says:
“My mission is to make them have a little bit of levity on the way out and say, ‘Hey, it’s not so bad after all,'” says Mike Herr.
To that end, Mike lives by a simple motto: if you can’t say something nice about someone, you’re just not looking hard enough.
Even if it’s only how nicely they filled out their forms. And he’s been like this with just about every customer, every day, for 38 years.
This year Mike is set to retire: http://www.collegian.psu.edu/news/campus/article_01e0d80c-d99b-11e5-b304-6b04f0124b95.html
I am sure the Post Office at PSU will be a little different when this happens, however I think everyone can take Mike’s message and use it in your daily life. Try to say something nice about someone today. I think we are all way too critical of each other as a society, and sometimes we forget to stop and say thank you to those that go the extra mile. I often find myself questioning why certain people are even in a customer service type role because you can tell they are miserable, but maybe if people were a little nicer to them when seeking out service they would be kinder to the next person. Maybe not…but we can always try!
Thanks for reading and have a fun WEEKEND 🙂
Here are some funny old PSU pictures that I found…
